PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
Graduated in Medicine by the Faculty of Medicine of Porto, completed in 1978. Specialist in Radiology since 1987, having obtained the final classification of 19 values and recognized by the Order of Physicians by unanimity with Distinction. He also acquired the competence in Neuroradiology, according to Certificate issued by the College of Radiodiagnostic of the Order of Physicians.
Founded the first JCC Diagnostic Imaging Clinic at Viana do Castelo in 1987, originally designated by Consultório João Carlos Costa - Diagnóstico por Imagem. In 2004, this clinic changed to new facilities, incorporating independently the building of the Private Hospital of Viana do Castelo. Additionally, since that date, Dr. João Carlos Costa is also one of the founding partners of the Private Hospital of Viana do Castelo.
Dr. João Carlos Costa developed in Portugal Percutaneous Interventional Radiology in an innovative way, including interventional procedures on the spine (disc decompression nucleotomy by laser and ozone, vertebroplasty, treatment of narrow spinal canal and radicular pain through epidural and foraminal infiltrations, treatment of facet syndrome with facet joints infiltrations); treatment of pain in oncologic patients (trans-aortic celiac plexus, dorsal or hypogastric neurolysis); treatment of palmar and plantar hyperhidrosis through ethanol sympatholysis, percutaneous biopsies procedures, nephrostomy, placement of prosthesis in the urinary tract, and he was also the pioneer in the percutaneous placement of prostheses in the bile ducts.

1987: Creation of the first JCC Diagnostic Imaging Clinic at Viana do Castelo - the first Radiology Unit of Alto-Minho sub-region, with ultrasound, mammography and computed tomography (CT) and later in 1994, installing the first Magnetic Resonance (MR).
1998: Creation of JCC Diagnostic Imaging Unit at Bragança.
2010: Creation of JCC Diagnostic Imaging Clinic at Vila Real.
2018: Creation of JCC Diagnostic Imaging Clinic at Braga.
2021: Creation of JCC Diagnostic Imaging Clinic at Porto, at the Ordem S. Francisco hospital.
Since 2015: Service agreement for CT scans on Private Hospital of Barcelos.
Since 2012: Creation of a new Radiology Clinic at Luanda: CDIL - Diagnostic Imaging Unit, with MR, CT, Mammography, Ultrasound and Conventional Radiology, Angola.
2012-2013: Assumes the Direction of the Radiology Department of Hospital-Escola from Fernando Pessoa University.
2011-2017: Co-management of and Service agreement with the Radiology Department of the Hospital Clínica Girassol at Luanda, Angola.
2010 - 2015: Creation and Service agreement of an MR Unit of the Private Hospital of Guimarães - Casa de Saúde de Guimarães.
2009 - 2016: Creation and management of a Diagnostic Imaging Unit in the Hospital São José da Santa Casa da Misericórdia - Arcos de Valdevez, in collaboration with local Santa Casa da Misericórdia, equipped with CT, Ultrasound, Mammography and Conventional Radiology.
2006 - 2009: Creation and Service agreement of an MRI Unit at Trofa Hospital, Trofa.
2004-2012: Creation and Service agreement of a CT Unit at Centro Hospitalar do Nordeste – Unidade Hospitalar de Macedo de Cavaleiros.
2004 - 2008: Assumes the Direction and Management of the Radiology Department of Viana do Castelo Hospital – ULSAM - Hospital de Santa Luzia.
1998 - 2016: Creation and Service agreement of a CT Unit at Hospital de Fão, in collaboration with the local Santa Casa da Misericórdia.
